멕시코 몬테레이에 들어선 이 작은 예배당은 간결하고도 엄숙한 의미의 지역적 공간이다. 납골당과 예배를 위한 공간을 설계해야 했던 건축가는 공간 안에 스며드는 빛을 조심스럽게 다루기 위해, 콘크리트를 사용하여 그만의 독특한 섬세함을 보여줬다. 우리는 이러한 과정에 대한 이야기를 건축가와의 짧은 인터뷰를 통해 더 들어보기로 했다.

This small chapel in Monterrey, Mexico, is a local space with a concise yet solemn meaning. The architect, who had to design a space for worshipping and for the ossuaries, portrayed a unique sensitivity by using concrete to carefully handle the light that permeates into the space. We decided to hear more about this process a short interview with the architect.

Q. 이번 달의 주제는 “콘크리트는 섬세하다”이다. 건축가의 입장에서 건축 자재로써 콘크리트를 어떻게 생각하는가?
콘크리트는 고유의 개성이 있는 재료로, 건물이 품위 있게 나이 들어 갈 수 있도록 하는 특별한 특성과 습성을 가지고 있다.

Q. This month’s issue is “Concrete Is Sensitive”. From an architect’s viewpoint, what do you think of the concrete as materials?
Concrete is a material that has its own personality, it has a particular character and a special behavior that makes buildings grow old with dignity.

Q. 건축가가 건물에 콘크리트를 사용하기로 선택하고 설계할 때 가장 중요한 것은 무엇이라고 생각하는가?
중요하게 생각해 볼 것들은 여러 가지가 있다. 그래도 가장 중요한 것은 건물의 기하학적 구조를 정의하는 것이다. 우리는 항상 모듈로 시작하는 콘크리트로 건축물을 만든다. 이 모듈은 사용되는 거푸집에 의해 정의되며 건물 전체를 따르는 각 요소의 질감에 따라 변경될 수도 있다.

Q. What do you think is the most important thing, when the architect chooses and designs to use the concrete in the building?
There are several things, one of the most important is the definition of the geometry of the building. We always work with the concrete starting with a module, this module it’s defined by the formwork that is used and it can change depending on the texture on each element that conforms the whole building.

Q. 콘크리트가 묵직한 느낌을 준다. 우리는 이 프로젝트에서 콘크리트라는 자재가 종교적인 엄숙함을 드러낸다고 생각한다. 설계할 당시, 자재를 미리 정해놓고 진행했는가?
콘크리트를 미리 염두에 두진 않았지만, 늘 건축물의 구조적인 것들을 고려하다 보면 유일한 선택지로 남게 된다. 마감재는 자연스러운 외관을 만들면서도, 모든 불규칙성을 보존하는 것이 중요했다. 우리 프로젝트인 교회에서 가장 중요한 요소는 빛이었다. 이 빛은 공간의 요소들과 접촉할 때 특별한 공간으로 보이게끔 하는 역할을 해냈다.

Q. Concrete is heavy. We think the concrete can replace this with religious solemnity in this project. Had you made choices for the material in advance while designing?
No, we didn’t, the concrete was always the only choice for the whole structure of the building and it was important that we preserved all the irregularities on the natural appearance of the material, natural light was the most important element in the church and plays a special role when it touches the different elements of the building.

Q. 작업하면서 가장 기억에 남는 경험은 무엇인가? 작업이 실현된 후 개선하고 싶은 것이 있었는가?
자연광을 가지고 작업해 온 모든 방법들과 자연광이 건물과 일치하는 견고한 요소로 어떻게 작동하는지에 대한 복잡한 기하학적 탐구가 가장 기억에 남는다. 콘크리트와 나무 골조로 함께 작업하면서, 연결 부분이라던가 여러 면에서 더 개선을 할 수 있는 부분이 있다고 생각한다.

Q. What is the most memorable experience you have had while working on it? After it was realized, do you have anything you would like to improve?
It was a complex geometrical exploration of the different ways to work with the natural light and how it would behave with the solid elements that conforms the building, After working with concrete and wood framework I think we could improve in so many ways, mostly more organic explorations.

Q. 부초 스피넬리 아키텍처의 건축 철학은 무엇인가? 그리고 이 프로젝트에 철학을 어떻게 적용했는가?
“땅이 건축물을 만든다.” 건물의 비율, 위치, 높이, 교회에 부합하는 모든 요소는 바로 그 맥락에 의해 규정된다. 우리의 이번 프로젝트 역시 이 점에서 분명하다.

Q. What is an architectural philosophy of Buzzo Spinelli Architecture (or personally)? And how did you apply the philosophy to this project?
“The site makes the project” The proportions of the building, it’s location, it’s height and all the elements that conforms the church were defined by the preexistences on the immediate context, and the result was obvious.

Q. 끝으로 건축가로서의 포부에 대해 말해달라. 다음 단계는 무엇인가?
항상 건축가로서 발전하는 것을 좋아하고 한 사람으로서 건축 교사이기도 하며 나의 지식을 학생들과 공유하고 그들로부터 배우는 것을 좋아한다. 다음 단계? 더 나은 도시를 만들기 위해 계속 노력할 것이다. 건축은 사람들의 생활 방식을 바꿀 수 있는 능력을 가지고 있으며 그것은 하나의 큰 책임이다.

Q. In conclusion, could you tell us about aspirations as an architect? What is your next step?
I always like to improve as an architect and as a person, I’m also an architecture teacher and I love to share my knowledge with my students and learn from them. The next step? Keep working on making better cities, architecture has the capability to change the way the people live and that’s a huge responsibility.
