[이슈인터뷰] ‘스카이 야드 호텔’에 대하여

주변 환경의 영향을 많이 받는 호텔 설계 중에서도 스카이 야드 호텔이 보여준 설계는 이전에 보기 힘들었던 방법이다. 자연 속에 있으면서도 공사 현장과 산업용 부지로 둘러싸인 지면부의 시야를 차단하고, 멀리 있는 산과 하늘의 경관만을 객실로 끌어들이기 위해 독특한 입면 구성 전략을 선보였다. 이러한 설계적 방법을 선택한 배경과 과정을 알아보기 위해 인터뷰를 진행했다.

Among the hotel designs that are highly influenced by the surrounding environment, the design presented by Sky Yards Hotel is a method that was difficult to see in the past. In order to block the view of the ground area surrounded by construction sites and industrial sites while being in nature, and to attract only the scenery of the distant mountains and the sky into the rooms, a unique elevation composition strategy was presented. We conducted an interview to learn about the background and process of choosing this design method.

Q. 이번 달 주제는 ‘호텔: 지역색 깊숙이 들어가다’이다. 건축가의 관점에서 바라봤을 때, 이상적인 공간을 가진 호텔은 어떤 모습이어야 한다고 생각하는가?
호텔은 일반적으로 사람들이 집 외에 거주하는 유일한 장소다. 쾌적하고 심지어 놀라운 삶의 경험을 누릴 수 있는 좋은 기회이지만 항상 기억에선 잊혀지고 만다. 특히, 중국에서는 시장의 이유와 엄격한 건축 법규로 인해 다양한 생활 공간을 실험하기가 매우 어렵다. 우리에게 훌륭한 호텔(비즈니스 호텔은 제외)은 다양한 생활 방식에 대한 사람들의 상상력을 넓혀주는 곳이다. 건축가로서 우리는 생활 공간과 환경 사이에 혁신적이고 영감을 주는 관계를 만들기 위해 기존 호텔들의 설정, 규격화된 설계는 잊어야 한다.

Q. This month’s issue is “Hotel, deep into the local color”. From the architect’s point of view, what do you think a hotel building with an ideal space should be like?
A hotel is almost the only place for most people to live in other than home. It offers a great yet always forgotten opportunity for exploring fresh or even mind-blowing living experience. Especially in China, due to market reasons and rigorous building codes, it is extremely hard to experiment diverse living spaces. To me, a great hotel (except business hotels) should broaden people’s imagination about different ways of living. As architects, we should forget the default settings and conventional formulas, to create innovative and inspiring relationships between living spaces and environment.

Q. 호텔을 디자인할 때 가장 중요한 요소는 무엇이라고 생각하나? 자연과 건축(또는 건축과 투숙객)의 관계는 어떻게 형성되어야 하는가?
호텔에서 인상적인 로비나 수영장은 많이 볼 수 있지만 흥미로운 객실을 기억하기란 훨씬 어렵다. 결국 우리는 대부분의 시간을 방에서 보낸다. 그렇기 때문에, 객실 안에서의 경험이 호텔 설계의 핵심이어야 한다고 생각한다. 자연이든 도시든 상관없이 이전에는 없었을지도 모르는 투숙객이 환경과 상호작용하는 방식을 탐구할 수 있는 공간이 되길 바란다.

예를 들어, 많은 오두막 집들이 있지만, 나무들 한가운데에 오두막을 짓는 것만으로는 충분하지 않을 수도 있다. 방에 머무는 동안 정말 나무숲 속으로 뛰어드는 기분 속에 있을 수 있을까? 나무에 완전히 안긴 내 자신을 알아보는 건 어떨까? 또는 내부와 외부의 경계를 최소화하거나 혼합할 수 있을까? 아니면 환경을 다른 종족으로서 경험할 수 있는 기회를 만들 수도 있을까?

Q. What do you think is the most important element when you were designing a hotel? How the relationship should be formed between nature and the architecture (or architecture and guest)?
We have all seen lots of impressive lobbies or pools but it is much harder to recall many interesting guestrooms. In the end, we spend most of our time in the rooms. In my mind, room experience should be the core of hotel design. I hope guests in their rooms would be able to explore unprecedented ways of interacting with the environment (no matter it is nature or urban).

For example, there are lots of trees houses, but I think simply place a hut in the middle of trees may not be enough. Is it possible to feel really diving into the trees while in the rooms? Why not wake up and find out myself completely embraced by trees? Or is it possible to minimize or blend the boundary of interior and exterior? Or even create an opportunity to experience the environment as another species?

Q. 이번 프로젝트에서 “들어 올리는(liftting)” 전략은 매우 인상적이다. 작업하면서 가장 기억에 남는 일은 무엇인가? 프로젝트가 지어지고 난 후, 개선하고 싶은 점이 있다면 무엇인가.
대지는 허난성에서 가장 유명한 경관 지역인 윤타이 산에서 차로 15분 거리에 있다. 대지 조사를 가기 전, 당연하게도 산 속에 있는 아주 시적이고 멋진 장소를 기대하고 있었다. 하지만 이 대지에서 처음 경험한 것은 전혀 예상 밖이었다. 대지는 평야에 자리 잡고 있었고, 미완성된 건물 부지, 황무지와 산업의 유적으로 둘러싸여 있었다. 산은 보이지만 대지에서 보이지 않았다.

그 자리를 보자마자 손님의 입장이 되어 눈높이 아래 경치를 감추고 하늘과 산만 드러날 수 있도록 하기로 결심했다. 비록 이것은 매우 드문 일이었지만, 이 방법이 매우 독특하고 감동적인 경험으로 이어질 것이라고 믿었다.

Q. The “Lifting” strategy in your project is very impressive. What is the most memorable experience you have had while working on it? After it was realized, do you have anything you would like to improve?
The site is about 15min-drive from Yuntai Mountain, the most popular scenic area in Henan Province. Naturally I was expecting a poetic site in a mountain environment before I went. But my first experience on the site was absolutely out of my expectation – it’s sitting on a plain, surrounded by unfinished building site, waste land and industrial remains. The mountain is visible but unreachable from the site.

When I saw the site, I almost instantly started to put myself in the position of a guest and decided to conceal the views below eye level and only reveal the sky and the mountain far away. Although this was an extremely rare action, I still believed it would lead to a very distinctive and moving experience.

Q. 이번 프로젝트를 준비하면서 특히 어떤 부분에 집중했는가?
가장 중요한 부분은 객실 내 투숙객과 대지 환경간의 관계다. 대지의 면적, 건설 예산 및 시간 또한 매우 빠듯했고 기능의 복잡성에 제한적이었다.

Q. What part did you especially focus on while preparing for this project?
The most important part is the relationship between guests in the rooms and the site environment. The site area, construction budget and time are also incredibly tight and limited for the complexity of the functions.

Q. 도메인 아키텍츠의 건축 철학은 무엇인가? 그리고 이번 프로젝트에 어떻게 그 철학이 반영되었는가?
우리는 혁신적인 현장 전략으로 공간 경험을 개혁하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 사용자 경험을 모든 설계의 핵심으로 간주하며, 모든 대지가 독특한 공간 경험을 창출하고 매력적인 “도메인”이 될 수 있는 큰 잠재력을 가지고 있다고 믿는다. 기존 모델을 거부함으로써, 우리는 계속해서 대지의 본질적인 특성으로 돌아가서 공간의 논리와 품질을 재창조하려 한다.

Q. What is an architectural philosophy of Domain Architects? And how did you apply the philosophy to this project?
Our practice strives to reform the spatial experience with innovative site strategy. We consider user experience as the core of all designs, and believe every site has great potential to generate distinctive spatial experience and become a fascinating “domain”. By rejecting conventional models, we keep going back to the original nature of sites and programs to reinvent the logic and quality of spaces.

Q. 건축가로서 당신의 포부에 대해 말해 달라. 다음 목표는 무엇인가?
호텔과 게스트하우스 외에도 주민센터, 노인요양원 등 공공 및 기관 사업도 진행하고 있다. 모든 새로운 유형의 프로그램은 흥미진진한 모험이다.

어떤 의미에서, 나의 철학은 나의 포부이기도 하다. 코로나가 유행하기 3개월 전에 도메인 아키텍츠를 시작했다. 작년부터 기후 변화와 잦은 극한 날씨도 점점 더 주목을 받고 있다. 앞으로 몇 십 년 안에 사람들은 환경과의 관계에 더 민감해질 것이라고 생각한다. 이러한 점을 고려해서 도메인 아키텍츠가 창의적인 사용자 환경의 경계를 계속 넓혀가는, 혁신적이고 시적이며 지속 가능한, 사람과 환경 간의 관계를 계속해서 탐색해 나가기를 바란다.

Q. In conclusion, could you tell us about aspirations as an architect? What is Domain Architects next step?
Other than hotels and guesthouses, we are also working on public and institutional projects, such as community center and elderly nursing home. Every new type of program is an exciting adventure.

In a sense, my philosophy is also my aspiration. I started Domain Architects just three months before COVID-19 appeared. Since last year, the climate change and frequent extreme weather is also drawing more and more attention. In the next a few decades, I think people will be more sensitive on the relationship with each other and the environment. Taking these into account, I hope Domain Architects will keep pushing the boundaries of creative user experience, and keep exploring innovative, poetic, and sustainable relationships between people and environment.
