The Kui village in Surin, Thailand, where the Elephant Museum is located, is particularly deep in ties with elephants. The Elephant Museum, which is located in these places, is part of the Elephant World, which was established as part of a project of the Thai government to rehabilitate elephants that have been abused and forced to work. We talked with the Bangkok Project Studio about the efforts we have made to preserve the long-established ties between the villagers and the 200 elephants living here.

Q. This month’s issue is “Museum, way to concentration”. From an architect’s viewpoint, what do you think is the architectural experience of the museum?
Museum is a learning tool, but in today’s world where the role of multimedia has overshadowed the importance of architecture, my challenge is to return museums to the ordinary people, and in this case to those who live with large animals in a poor and parched neighborhood far away from prosperity. An open-air museum is to allow viewers to experience the real atmosphere and location, to meet with people living in that area, to hear what they have to say from their own mouths about their feelings and viewpoints from the villagers toward the elephants. Multimedia equipment cannot convey these essences to the audience. Thus, this museum building has become a part of their lives.

Q. How did you feel when first visit in the site? And what did the client require you detailed?
Surin is often forgotten and one of the poorest provinces of Thailand with no tourist attraction. The project itself is located in a degraded forest and most of the trees were felled, leaving only dry red mounds. Under this scorching weather, houses of Kui people scatter all over the area. Elephants and humans live in under the same roof – a surprising sight to me.

Surin Provincial Administrative Organization invited me to be the project’s Architect. They would like this area to be an ecological and cultural tourist destination centered on the Kui people and elephants, the indigenous groups of Surin. I was given full freedom to propose programs and designs. Once I realized the good intention of the project to help the villagers and especially elephants, which have coexisted with humans from the past to present and are suffering from various problems, I agreed to join the project.

Q. What did you consider the most important thing during designing process in this project?
The villagers were deceived and wrongly alleged by foreigners for torturing elephants. Therefore, the most important thing was to gain trust from them so that they were comfortable to tell us the true stories. We then delivered those stories as they were told by the villagers, the community leaders, the mahouts, along with the quality of life of the elephants and other evidences, using the museum to represent the “voice of the Kui people” and the people of Surin. The true stories were embodied into the museum fused with happiness, pain, and the tie between people and elephants.

Q. What is the most memorable experience you have had while working on it?
I was impressed by the local workers who dedicated their effort to building these buildings despite having no experience with structures like these. They showed effort to learn, patience, and determination to create buildings that would later become the hope and pride of Surin. Even with limited budget, these local people contributed their energy and fund to make it happen. The head worker said to me, “Our pride is to have this once in a lifetime opportunity to work with Teacher Boonserm on our homeland.”

Q. What made you decide to build as handmade bricks? What did you think is the most important thing in designing and dealing with brick?
Bricks were made from clay in the area, shaped by hand piece by piece, and gradually stacked upon each other, one layer at a time. The dug out clay left an empty space which became a water source for the elephants, humans, forests, and plant food for the elephants. Each lump of clay was shaped and burned with firewood until turning red and becoming bricks. Together, each brick forms a large piece of cladding layer of the wall enveloping the entire building. Most of the budget in this project was spent on worker wages. Usually, for construction projects, the largest part of the budget will go to mass-produced and ready-to-use materials, and thus, the money would not fully reach the workers, or in this case, villagers. Using bricks is a way to create jobs and generate income for local people, and stimulate the local economy. “The first brick may not be perfectly placed, but the four hundred thousandth one is definitely going to be impeccable.” Skill is developed by doing the same thing over and over again, a journey that an unskilled labor needs to take to become an artisan. Architecture serves to train people, creates a sense of pride for the local people through participation. Clay, once a useless material, has found a new value as it was turned into a local museum building to represent the strength of the people.

Bangkok Project Studio has created many social programs through several projects. What is an architectural philosophy of Bangkok Project Studio? And how did you apply the philosophy to this project? My architecture is a reflection of society. Through the Elephant Museum Project, I wish to shed light on the self-centered nature of humanity which is a root cause of many problems, and this ‘non-human centered architecture’ is sending a message to people, telling them to reflect on their action that damages natural resources and affects themselves and animals. By valuing other beings and things, humans do not diminish their roles. Instead, it is a shift in perspective and helps elevate human’s mind to empathize with other beings which are equally valuable. My architecture reflects the life of rural society. I value the land in the countryside, unknown and far from prosperity, where the project is situated. I point out the need to improve the quality of life of people who are neglected. The architecture I work on is responsible for connecting people from different places so that they are able to experience the atmosphere, feelings and memories of that place. My architecture is a piece of art that creates a positive attitude for the audience. To me, building an attitude is more important than having any philosophy, concept or theory.

In conclusion, could you tell us about aspirations as an architect? What is your next step? Today, I am still learning to create architectural works that are borderless and open, to pave a new path as a means of communication with viewers and users. Going off the beaten path, transcending the architectural divide into the realm of artistic creation, and adding values to ordinary materials with an incredible transformative potential – these are challenges to me. In other words, I learn take on different journeys with the same ordinary materials

Q. In conclusion, could you tell us about aspirations as an architect? What is your next step?
