스위스 로잔에 알록달록한 색채로 눈길을 사로잡는 건물이 들어섰다. 외관으로 강한 정체성을 드러내는 동시에 지역과의 관계를 풀어낸 계획은 지역에 새로운 활기를 불어넣었다. 오 앙트헤포를 설계한 HHF 아키텍츠의 공동창립자 Tilo Herlach와 인터뷰를 통해 이 프로젝트에 대해 심도 있게 이야기 나눠보았다.

A colorful building has been built in Lausanne, Switzerland. The plan to reveal a strong identity in appearance and at the same time unravel the relationship with the region brought new vitality to the region. We talked about the project in depth in an interview with Tilo Herlach, co-founder of HHF architecture, who designed Aux Entrepôts.

Q. 이번 달의 주제는 복합주거시설이다. 설계할 때 여러 가지 요인의 영향을 받겠지만, 특히 다중이용 건축물을 설계할 때 무엇을 먼저 고려해야 한다고 생각하나?
물론, 고객의 요구에 따라 다르다. 그러나 우리는 다중이용이 목적이 다른 이용자가 서로 이익이 되는 방법에 대해 접근하는 방식이 항상 흥미롭다. 특히, 사회적 다양성을 갖춘 탄력적인 지역사회를 구축하는 경우에는 더욱 그렇다. 복합시설은 일반적으로 각 용도를 보완하는 흥미로운 공간 대비를 만드는 데 사용 가능한 다양한 유형과 유연성이 필요하다. 이것은 큰 도전 과제다. 서로 다른 용도 간의 상호작용을 용이하게 할 수 있는 중첩 요소와 공간이 있는 경우에는 더욱 그렇다.

Q. This month’s theme is “Multi-use housing complex”. When designing an architectural design, it will be affected by many factors, but when you design multi-used architecture, what do you think should be considered first?
Of course it depends on the brief from the client. For HHF it is however always interesting when the approach is to facilitate for possible scenarios where the multiple uses of a project benefit from each other – especially when it comes to building a resilient community with social diversity. Multiple uses normally require different typologies and flexibilities, which can be used to create exciting spatial contrasts that complement each other – this is a great challenge. Especially where there are overlapping elements and spaces which can facilitate exchange in between the different uses.

Q. 이 프로젝트와 일반적인 주거시설의 차이점은 무엇인가?
이 프로젝트의 특징은 주택의 매우 다른 유형들을 위에 얹었다는 것이다. 이를 통해 각 주택뿐만 아니라 새롭게 조성된 지구 전반의 주민이 어우러지는 모습을 더욱 풍성하게 만들어 나갈 수 있기를 기대한다. 프로그램을 전환하는 동시에 더 큰 마스터플랜의 일부인 프로젝트는 항상 흥미롭다. 벽돌 베니어판의 화려한 전면과 산업적인 텍스처는 사실상 유지보수가 필요 없는 역사적인 특징이다. 이러한 측면 외에도 향후 변화되는 요구에 대응할 수 있는 경제적 효율성과 지속 가능성, 유연성에 대해 높은 목표를 가지고 있었다. 이 모든 것은 DGNB 인증에서 확인할 수 있는데, DGNB 인증은 지속가능성뿐만 아니라 사회적 요인도 포함하며, 이는 서로 다른 목표 집단의 혼합을 통해 충족된다.

요약하자면, 오 앙트헤포는 획일적인 사업과 달리 가족을 위한 임대아파트부터 지상층의 비즈니스와 결합할 수 있는 오피스텔, 최상층의 넉넉한 펜트하우스까지 생생하게 어우러진 것이 특징이다.

Q. What is the difference between the residential spaces of this project compared to general residential buildings?
Specific to this project is the fact that it puts very different typologies of housing on top of each other. With this we hope to enrich the mix of residents not only of each house, but also in the newly built district in general. It is always interesting with projects where you change the programming while being part of a greater master plan. The colourful façades and industrial touch of the brick veneer is a historical nod while being virtually maintenance free. Apart from these aspects we have aimed high when it comes to cost efficiency, sustainability and flexibility for future needs. All this can be seen in the DGNB certification, which counts not only sustainability, but also social factors, which are met through the mix of different target groups.

To sum it up: Unlike homogenous and uniform projects, Aux Entrepôts features a vivid mix ranging from rental apartments for families to live-in lofts that can be combined with businesses on the street level, and generous penthouse apartments on the top floors.

Q. 작업을 진행하며 어려웠던 점이 있다면 듣고 싶다. 이것을 해결하기 위해 어떤 시도를 했나?
산업 단지를 세입자들이 집이라 부르며 향유할 수 있는 창의성과 장난기로 정의되는 활기찬 구역, 특성과 정체성이 뚜렷한 구역으로 바꾸는 것이 과제였다. 강력한 정체성 안에서 다양한 가능성을 제공하면서도 비용 면에서는 효율적이어야 했다. 이것은 우리가 단순히 기하학적으로 정의된 4개 동에 강한 정체성을 만들기 위해 색을 사용한 이유 중 하나다. 콘크리트를 덜 사용한 공법에도 많은 노력을 기울였는데, 이는 경제적일 뿐만 아니라 지속가능성 측면에서도 큰 장점이 있다.

Q. What were the constraints of this project, and what efforts did you make to solve it?
The challenge was to transform an industrial plot into a lively quarter defined by creativity and playfulness that tenants are happy to call home, a quarter with a strong soul and identity. It had to cost effective, while still offering a variety of possibilities within a strong identity. This was one of the reasons why we used colours to create a strong identity in a quarter defined by a simple geometry. We also put a lot of effort into construction methods using less concrete, which is not only cost efficient, but also a great advantage from a sustainability perspective.

Q. 이 프로젝트를 진행하면서 기억에 남는 일이 있다면 듣고 싶다.
나는 부드러운 공간, 즉 개인과 공공의 경계를 허무는 동시에 개인과 공공의 특화된 공간을 개발하는 것이 정말 즐거웠다. 우리는 종종 하버드 디자인대학원과 같은 대학에서 이러한 주제를 중심으로 프로젝트를 만들도록 하곤 한다. 오 앙트헤포에서 부드러운 공간은 소위 로지아라고 불리는 10~20㎡의 공간을 통합하여 만들어졌다. 이러한 공간에서 아파트의 거주자들은 겨울 정원을 조성하거나 사업을 발표할 수 있고, 전시회 등을 개최할 수 있다.

Q. If there is anything memorable while working on this project, I would like to hear it.
I really enjoyed developing the soft spaces – spaces that dissolve the borders between the private and the public while receiving signals from both the private and the public. We often create projects around this theme in our teachings at universities like Harvard Graduate School of Design. In Aux Entrepôts the soft spaces were created by incorporating so-called loggia d’entrées – spaces of 10-20 square metres that are fronting the large loft apartments at street level. In these spaces the tenant of these apartments can create winter gardens, present their businesses, make exhibitions or in other ways add positive values to the whole quarter.

Q. 2003년에 Tilo Herlach, Simon Hartmann, Simon Frommenwiler이 공동 설립하여 현재까지 작업을 이어오고 있는HHF 아키텍츠의 건축 철학이 이 프로젝트에 반영된 것이 무엇인지 자세히 말해달라.
우리의 개인, 학업 및 작업 이력은 4개 대륙에서 실행된 프로젝트와 함께 글로벌하고 협력적이다. 오 앙트헤포는 가장 적절한 방식으로 문제에 대응한 좋은 예다. 가까이에 있는 모든 것을 더하고, 빼거나 보존함으로써 환경 영향을 줄이고 지속가능한 건축을 하고자 했고, 로잔 지역의 마스터플랜에 기여했다고 할 수 있다.

Q. HHF Architects was founded in 2003 by Tilo Herlach, Simon Hartmann and Simon Frommenwiler What is HHF’s architectural philosophy and explain in detail what it reflects in this project.
Our personal, academic and professional track records are resolutely global and collaborative in orientation, with executed projects on four continents. Aux Entrepôts is a good example of responding to a problem in the most pertinent way. By adding, subtracting, or preserving we have made the most of whatever is at hand, we have done the least possible for minimum sustainable impact and yet creating a maximum effect that is our contribution to a greater masterplan for Renens, a district of Lausanne.

Q. 마지막으로, 건축가로서의 포부는 무엇인가?
건축가인 우리가 다른 분야와 협력하여 더 나은 세상을 만드는 데 기여할 수 있는 혁신적인 아이디어를 개발하고 싶다. HHF는 매우 다양한 면에 적용할 수 있다. 과거부터 현재까지, 우리는 정형적인 요구를 하는 고객과 오랜 대화를 통해 최선의 프로젝트를 만들어낸다. 그 예로, 도시개발 순례자를 위한 전망대, 어린이 공원 수장고, 발칸지역의 혁명적인 사원 리모델링, 전망대 및 곤충박물관, 도심의 상점과 매력적인 아파트, 부티크 등이 있다. 따라서 우리의 업역은 도시 규모부터 대형 건물, 상점, 박물관 호텔 공공미술관, 고급 아파트와 인테리어까지 다양하다.

앞으로 우리는 지형을 재구성하고 가장 작은 요소, 즉 도시 인프라를 최상위 구조에 연결하기 위해 다양한 규모를 융합할 수 있는 능력을 강조할 것이다. 지속가능하고 탄력적이며 유연한 프로젝트를 개발하기 위해 최신 디지털 도구를 활용하여 고대와 현대의 지식을 혼합한 결과물을 만드는 것을 목표로 할 것이다.

Q. Finally, what is your aspiration as an architect? What do you think is the next step?
To develop innovative new ideas where we as architects can take responsibility while collaborating with other professions to contribute to building a better world. HHF is at ease in extremely varied contexts – in the past and currently we develop projects that are the fruit of long conversations with clients of atypical ambition: urbanistic transformations, a lookout point for pilgrims, a children’s park, a collectors’ storehouse, a revolutionary temple reuse in the Balkans, an observatory and insect museum on the loops of the Seine, downtown retail centres, and appealing apartments and boutiques.

Thus the scope of our work and architectural practice ranges from urbanism and large-scale construction, to retail centres, museums, hotels and public pavilions, to luxurious apartments and interior design. In the future we will emphasize this capacity to superimpose various scales in order to reconfigure terrains and connect the smallest to the largest element, the infrastructure to the superstructure. We will aim to do this through mixing ancient and current knowledge with the latest digital precision tools in order to keep building projects that are sustainable, resilient and flexible.

HHF Architects는 틸로 허락, 사이먼 하트만, 사이먼 프롬윌러dl 2003년에 설립했다. 10년이 조금 넘는 기간 동안, HHF는 스위스, 프랑스, 미국, 독일, 몬테네그로, 중국, 멕시코에서 프로젝트를 연구하고 진행했다. 건축 실무의 범위는 도시계획과 대규모 건축에서부터 소매센터, 박물관, 호텔, 공공관, 고급 아파트, 인테리어까지 다양하다. 프로젝트에 대한 시야를 넓히고 수준을 높이기 위해 다른 건축가와 예술가와 협업을 진행했으며, 건축 외에도 보스턴 MIT, 예일건축대학의 교수로 활동했으며, 칼스루 공과대학 KIT와 하버드 다자인 대학원에서 강의하고 있다.
