환경과 지속가능성에 대한 논의는 현 세대 건축에서 가장 큰 화두일 것이다. BIM과 환경 모니터링을 적절히 사용해 그 효과를 입증받은 빈 보덴쿨투르 대학교는 현대 목구조 건축과 환경에 기여하는 건축이라는 점에서 눈여겨 볼 만하다. 대표 건축가가 가진 디자인 철학과 신념, 프로젝트의 이야기들을 들어보기 위해 인터뷰를 진행했다.
The debate on environment and sustainability will be the biggest topic and issue in the current generation of architecture. The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), which proved its effect by suitably using BIM and environmental monitoring, is notable in that it is a wooden structure building and an architecture that contributes to the environment. We conducted an interview to hear the design philosophy and beliefs of the main architect, as well as the stories of the project.

Q. 이번 달의 주제는 “캠퍼스 건물: 새로운 교집합”이다. 건축가의 관점에서 바라봤을 때, 이상적인 공간을 가진 학생과 교직원을 위한 건물은 어떤 모습이어야 한다고 생각하는가?
대학은 항상 지식을 전달하는 장소 이상의 의미를 가진다. 청년들이 만나 함께 배우고, 소통하고, 축하하는 장소이기 때문에 차별화된 공간을 제공해야 한다. 우리는 이 최근 프로젝트에서 도서관에 조용한 학습 공간뿐만 아니라 외부 공간에 공동 학습을 위한 격식 없는 공간, 소통 공간 및 라운지 공간을 만들고자 했다.
Q. This month’s issue is “Campus Building: New Intersection”. From the architect’s point of view, what do you think a building for students and faculty members with an ideal space should be like?
Universities always have been more than just places for imparting knowledge. They are places where young people meet, learn, communicate and celebrate together. Accordingly, they have to offer a differentiated range of rooms. In our last project, we tried to create quiet study areas in the library as well as informal zones for communal learning, communication zones and lounge areas in the outside space.

Q. 교육 목적의 건물을 설계할 때 가장 중요한 요소는 무엇이라고 생각하나? 도시와 건축(또는 건축과 프로그램)의 관계는 어떻게 형성되어야 하는가?
사용 가능한 공간도 중요하지만 캠퍼스 건물은 편안한 장소여야 한다. 많은 일광과 자연과의 친밀감은 지속 가능한 재료 선택이나 올바른 색상 개념만큼 중요하다. 대학은 도시 생활의 일부이며, 지식 사회의 시장이다. 연구원, 학생, 사회 간의 활발한 상호 작용을 위해 교육 건물의 건축은 개방적이고 공적이어야 한다.
이러한 개방성을 제공하기 위해서는 무엇보다 건물이 공공건물로 인식되고 인정받아야 한다. 접근이 용이해야 하며 장벽이 없으며, 대학의 다른 건물, 그리고 주변의 도시와 잘 연결되어야 한다.
Q. What do you think is the most important element when you were designing an educational building? How the relationship should be formed between urban and the architecture (or architecture and program)?
In addition to the available space, a campus building should be a comfortable place. Lots of daylight and closeness to nature are just as important as a sustainable choice of materials or the right color-concept. Universities are part of urban life, the marketplaces of the knowledge society. In order to enable lively interaction between researchers, students and society, the architecture of educational buildings must be open and public.
To provide this openness first of all the building has to be seen an to be recognized as public building. Is has to be easy to access, without barriers and well connected to other buildings of the University and its surrounding City.

Q. 프로젝트에서 목재 골격 구조가 매우 돋보인다. 어떤 탐색 과정이 현재의 디자인으로 이어졌는가?
건물 구조는 내부의 격자 천장과 파사드에서 읽을 수 있는 투명한 격자를 기반으로 한다. 대형 창문을 통해 우리는 내부와 외부 녹색 환경 사이의 소통을 만드는 데 성공했다. 건축과 기술이 눈에 보이도록 하는 것이 콘셉트였고, 목재 표면과 노출콘크리트, 전기 및 환기 배관도 눈에 띄도록 배치되었다.
Q. The timber skeleton construction in your project is very impressive. What exploration process has led to the current design?
The building structure is based on a clear grid, which can be read in the interior on the grid ceiling as well as on the facade. With large-scale windows, we have succeeded in creating a dialogue between the interior and the green exterior. The concept was that the construction and technology will be visible, in addition to the wooden surface and the exposed concrete, electrical and ventilation lines have also been laid visibly.

Q. 이번 프로젝트를 준비하면서 특히 어떤 부분에 집중했는가?
우리는 이번 프로젝트에서 사용됐던 디지털 플래닝 도구의 연구 및 개발도 진행했다. 여기에서 중심 요소는 통합 BIM 모델이었는데, 건물 소유주와 사용자는 VR 기기를 사용하여 계획 단계에서 가상 모델을 둘러볼 수 있었다. 목재 구조물을 조립할 때 디지털 도구와 목재 구성 요소의 센서는 귀중한 정보를 제공했다.
Q. What part did you especially focus on while preparing for this project?
SWAP also researches and develops digital planning tools, which were fully used in the BOKU- project. A central element here was the integral BIM model, using VR glasses, the building owner and user were able to look around in the virtual model during the planning phase. Digital tools and sensors on the timber-components provided valuable information during the assembly of the timber-structure.

Q. 작업하면서 가장 기억에 남는 일은 무엇인가? 프로젝트가 지어지고 난 후, 개선하고 싶은 점이 있다면 무엇인가?
공사가 진행되는 동안 목재로 건축하는 일이 얼마나 빠르고 깨끗하며 정밀할 수 있는지 보는 것이 신기했다. 건축가에 대한 최고의 인정은 사용자, 학생과 연구원이 공간을 잘 사용하는 것인데, 그들은 이 목조 건물을 자랑스럽게 생각하고 있다. 다음 프로젝트에서 개발하고자 하는 것은 파사드와 같은 부분의 사전 제작 단계다. 그래서 우리는 앞서 언급한 목재 건축의 이점을 더욱더 높이고자 한다.
Q. What is the most memorable experience you have had while working on it? After it was realized, do you have anything you would like to improve?
During the construction period it was fascinating to see how fast, clean and precise building with wood can be. The best recognition for architects is the acceptance of the users, students and researchers have appropriate the house and they are proud of their wooden house. The issue we want to develop in our next projects is the level of prefabrication, for example of the façade. So we want to increase the benefits of timber construction we mentioned before even more.

Q. 스왑 아키텍텐의 건축 철학은 무엇인가? 그리고 이번 프로젝트에 어떻게 그 철학이 반영되었는가?
성공적인 건축은 사람을 중심에 둔다. 사용자는 SWAP의 디자인에서 건물이 아름답고 잘 정리되어 있으며 환경친화적이기 때문에 편안함을 느껴야 한다. 이를 위해 법적, 경제적, 생태적 요구 사항이 개인과 사회를 위해 가능한 한 최대의 부가가치가 달성되는 방식으로 사용된다. 건축은 비즈니스가 아니라 환경에 대한 기여라고 생각한다.
SWAP은 건축과 생활을 원자재와 에너지가 신중하게 사용되는 순환으로 바라본다. SWAP은 교환을 의미한다. 내가 받는 것은 돌려주어야 하며, 공간, 원자재, 에너지 낭비를 줄여야 한다. SWAP은 건축 설계를 하며, 당신이 곧 공간이라는 생각을 하고 있다.
Q. What is an architectural philosophy of SWAP Architekten? And how did you apply the philosophy to this project?
Successful architecture puts people at the center. The Users should adopt the designs from SWAP independently: they should feel comfortable in the buildings because they are beautiful, well organized and environmentally friendly. For this purpose, the legal, economic and ecological requirements are used in such a way that the greatest possible added value is achieved for the individual and society. Architecture is not a business, but a contribution to our environment.
SWAP sees building and living as a cycle in which raw materials and energies are used with care. SWAP means exchange: what I take, I have to give. No waste, neither of space nor of raw materials or energy. No sprawl or sealing. SWAP designs architecture: You are the space.

Q. 건축가로서 당신의 포부에 대해 말해 달라. 스왑 아키텍텐의 다음 단계는 무엇인가?
우리는 헤르조겐부르크(Herzogenburg)에 있는 SAN 본부나 “Öfferl”-Bakery의 생산 시설과 같은 새로운 프로젝트를 통해 경험을 더욱 발전시키고 싶다. 기후변화 시대에 목재는 탄소 중립적인 건축 자재로서 매우 중요하지만 무한한 자원도 아니다. 따라서 미래에 도전해야 할 것은, 재료를 특성에 따라 올바르게, 자원을 절약하는 방식으로 사용하는 것이다. 이를 위해 우리는 계획, 연구 및 주택 건설을 계속해 나갈 것이다.
Q. In conclusion, could you tell us about aspirations as an architect? What is SWAP Architekten next step?
We want to further develop our experience in new projects, such as the SAN headquarters in Herzogenburg, or the production facility for “Öfferl”-Bakery. In times of climate change, wood is extremely important as a CO2-neutral building material, but it is also not an infinite resource. The challenge for the future is to use materials correctly according to their properties and and in a resource-saving manner, for this we want to continue planning, research and building houses.

스왑 아키텍텐(SWAP Architekten)는 2008년 설립된 회사로, 최근 몇 년 동안 의료공간, 실험실, 학교 건축 및 건축 적산 등 광범위한 분야를 다뤘다. 그들은 확장된 생활 공간으로서의 도시를 발견하기 위해 고전적인 생활 개념에 의문을 제기하고 극복해왔다. 사용자가 방과 기능에 대해 깊은 생각을 할 수 있도록 권장하는 방을 만드는 것이 SWAP의 목표로, 이를 구현하기 위해 공간은 완전히 결정될 수 없으며 예상치 못한 행위를 유발하기 위해 해석의 여지가 남아 있어야 한다고 믿는다.
