The Visitor Center of Duna-Ipoly National Park is not located within the national park, but in a residential area nearby called Pilisszentiván. Therefore, this project has the goal of being naturally fused into the town, while faithfully fulfilling the original function of the visitor center. Építész Stúdió utilized the structure of the existing building located on the site and added function with a luxurious wooden facade. We interviewed Építész Stúdió to learn more about their renovation process and understand their architectural philosophy.

Q. This month’s issue is “Visitor center: Voyager meets local scent”. From the architect’s point of view, what do you think a building for tourist and local people with an ideal space should be like?
Instead of the house itself, the connection between inside and outside was the most important issue during the design process since the main theme is conservation. Being located in the middle of a village we aimed for reaching harmony in scale and connection with the surroundings.

Q. What do you think is the most important element when you were designing a community building? How the relationship should be formed between people and the architecture (or architecture and historical heritage)?
From the behalf of the Duna-Ipoly National Park, a lot of colleague took part on the design meetings. Nearly everybody who works in this building, the decision makers, project coordinator, etc. were usually participating, so in a way we can call it a community design process.
We didn’t have this kind of close design connection with the local community, but once we personally presented the plans on a local forum where quite a lot of people participated and fortunately they liked the plans. We also tried to build in the useful comments as much as possible.

Q. The lightness of a wooden frame enclosing an existing residential building in your project is very impressive. What exploration process has led to the current design? Was there any particular reason you chose wood?
One purpose of the wooden façade structure is the homogeneous look thus acting like a public facility. Another purpose is to reach a constantly changing light-shadow play which gives a special atmosphere primarily in the in-between places.
The wood is the most ancient and organic building material of humanity. It is the most friendly material for children also. The ageing of wood is similar to ageing of people. It is just as hard to accept, like our own, but it is way better to handle this natural process naturally than fighting it. Thus were it important to choose a good quality timber (Larix decidua) which is going to be a gentle material even as getting grey.

Q. What is the most memorable experience you have had while working on it? After it was realized, do you have anything you would like to improve?
The original task was to refurbish and enlarge the existing residential building standing on the plot. Because of economic reasons the client wanted to keep the original building so we designed a new shell around the existing core. Beginning the construction turned out that it is not rational to keep the core as it is because of more problems.
By this time the original concept of the house was accepted and loved by everybody so the original core got demolished and rebuilt. Probably we would have designed a totally different building for an empty plot, however the shell got built around the rebuilt core instead of the original, we are happy to work on a specific situation like this.

Q. What is an architectural philosophy of Építész Stúdió? And how did you apply the philosophy to this project?
The Építész Stúdió works in horizontal structure, (architect offices are working in vertical structure generally), the different generations work and solve the problems together (for example we include beginners in the design process right at the beginning), at the same time there is no specialization (the specific project will be worked through by the same team). It was self-evident that we finish the project what we started together with Péter, despite of him having his own office now.

– Sándor Weöres (웨레스 산도르)
Q. In conclusion, could you tell us about aspirations as an architect? What is Építész Stúdió’s next step?
The time and proportionality are the basic principles of design, connected inevitably. The time: for how long period, how can it serve people in different seasons/time of day, how it acts being amortized, how it handles the changes in ways of using. Proportionality: choosing scale when designing the mass, materials and structures fitting their surroundings in architectural representation, the proportion of building cost and value in use in expenses, during the maintenance the relation between amortization and renewal.
Eternity is not in time, but in state of harmony
