ABOUT “LINGBAO CHILDREN’S CENTER”

도시 정비사업으로 높은 건물이 늘어선 현대 도시에서는 과거의 골목에서 마주치던 노점상이나 공원에서 바둑을 두는 모습은 점차 보기 어려워졌다. 지금은 잃어버린 이러한 모습들은 사회성이 발달하는 시기의 아이들에게 관계 맺는 법을 간접적으로 경험하게 하는 것이었다. 링바오 어린이센터는 이런 마을의 커뮤니티 기능을 회복하고 아이들에게 안전하고 자유로운 놀이 공간을 제공하고 있다. 건축문화에서는 건축가와의 인터뷰를 통해 그가 생각하는 어린이시설에 대한 이야기를 들어봤다.

In modern cities, where tall buildings were built due to urban redevelopment projects, it has become increasingly difficult to see street stalls in alleyways or people playing go in parks as in the past. These images, which are now lost, allowed children to indirectly experience how to form relationships when developing social skills. Lingbao Children’s Center is restoring this community function of the town and providing children with a safe and free play area Through an interview with the architect, Architecture & Culture heard about what they think of children’s facilities.

Q. 이번 호의 주제는 “자연을 벗삼은 보육시설”이다. 건축가 입장에서 유치원의 건축 경험은 무엇이라고 생각하는가.
어린이시설을 디자인할 때마다 행복할 뿐 아니라, 아이들의 입장에서 현장이나 공간을 다시 한 번 살펴볼 수 있는 기회가 된다. 우리는 어떤 특정한 디자인 포인트에서 새로운 시도와 실천을 하고자 한다. 그것은 우리가 아이들의 본성에 있는 무언가를 발견하도록 이끌어내는 것이다. 나는 아이들이 일상과는 다른 공간에서 탐험하기를 원한다. 사실, 가장 중요한 점은 아이들이 내가 디자인한 공간에서 일종의 자유를 느낄 수 있는 것이다. 공간 안에서 자유로운 탐험을 하고 심지어 인간 본성의 아름다움을 발견하기를 바란다.

아이들은 어린 시절에 그런 의식을 습득해야 하고, 그들의 미래에 대한 동기부여가 되어야 하며, 그들의 삶 전체에 복잡한 것들을 직면할 때 마음가짐과 본질적인 사고방식이 되어야 한다고 생각한다. 내가 할 수 있는 일은 일상 공간의 내재된 논리를 변화시키고 확장시켜 새로운 사고방식을 형성하게 하는 것에 지나지 않다. 이 또한 내가 할 수 있는 가장 중요한 일이다.

Q. This month’s issue is “Nature-embedded Childcare Center”. From an architect’s viewpoint, what do you think is the architectural experience of a Kindergarten?
Every time to design a children’s project, it is a happy experience, as well as an opportunity to look at sites and spaces from the perspective of children again. We hope to make new attempts and practices at some certain design points, which drives us to dig out something in the nature of children. I want them to explore in a space different from daily life. In fact, the most important point of my wish is that they can feel a kind of freedom in my designed space. To explore in such free state and even to discover the beauty of human nature in the space.

I think children should acquire such kind of consciousness in their childhood, and even become a motivation for their future, as well as a mindset and an essential mentality when facing the complicated things in their whole life. What I can do is no more than to change and expand the inherent logic of everyday space, thus making them form a new way of thinking-this is also the most important thing I can do.

Q. 대지를 처음 방문했을 때, 어떤 영감을 받았나. 그리고 건축주는 어떤 건축 공간을 요구했나.
링바오는 허난성 산멘시아의 행정구역 중 하나다. 링바오 북쪽의 한 공동체에 위치한 건물 개조 프로젝트였다. 나중에 이곳은 지역의 아동 성장 및 발달 센터가 됐다. 처음 현장을 방문했을 때, 기존 건물은 공간이 비좁은 느낌이 들었고, 반대편에 미완성된 사무실 건물이 있었다. 더욱이, 우리의 고객인 중국의 유명한 유아 교육기관이 처음으로 주 단위의 도시 시장을 발전시킨 반면, 지역 내의 보수적인 반응은 상대적으로 제한된 신생 자본을 이끌었다. 그리고 프로젝트 공사 기간이 촉박해서 큰 변화를 만들기 어려웠다.

Q. How did you feel when first visit in the site? And what did the client require you detailed?
Lingbao City is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Sanmenxia City, Henan Province. This was a building renovation project located in a community in the north of Lingbao. Later, it became a child growth and development center of the area. During my first visit on the site, my impression was that the original building was of low quality, with cramped space, and an unfinished office building was on the opposite to its south side. What’s more, this was the first time for our client – a well-known Chinese preschool education institution to develop the county-level city market, while the conservative expectations of the local market led the start-up capital relatively limited.

Q. 설계 과정에서 중요하게 생각한 점은 무엇인가.
이 프로젝트의 가장 중요한 점은 현재 위치의 부지가 ‘미래 도시’로 분류되어 주택 개발과 함께 지역이 강화될 것으로 예상되었기 때문에 이를 반영한 것을 건축주에게 이해시키는 것이었다. 따라서 현재 부지의 토지 가치가 크게 상승할 것으로 예상되어 토지 이용 시, 신중한 검토가 이루어졌다. 지역이 개발됨에 따라, 센터의 규모와 야외 놀이공간은 더욱 특별한 점이 될 것이다.

그래서 좋은 전략은 L자 모양의 복도에 있는 장식과 모든 여분의 수직선을 없애고, 기존 건물의 외관을 최대한 깨끗하게 하여 공사를 최적화 하는 것이었다. 정면 바깥쪽으로 기울어진 다섯 세트의 미끄럼틀은 각 층의 야외 공간을 연결하는 데 사용될 수 있다. 그리고 아이들의 활동 경로는 물결 모양의 행복한 흐름을 가지고 있다.

우리 고객은 특별한 요구 사항은 없고, 단지 비용을 줄이기를 희망했다. 그런 여건과 상황 속에서 우리는 여전히 전체 커뮤니티와는 다른 작고 하얀 세상, 어린이들이 놀이와 인식, 탐험과 사고에 집중할 수 있는 깨끗하고 실제적인 공간, 진정한 느낌과 행복을 얻을 수 있기를 바랐다.

Q. What did you consider the most important thing during designing process in this project?
The most important aspect of the project was to understand the clients brief, as the current zoning of the site classifies as ‘future urban’ with the area expected to intensify with the development of subdivisions/housing. Therefore, careful consideration was made for the use of land because it was expected that the current land value of the project will grow significantly. As the area intensifies, the scale of the centre and its outdoor play areas will become even more of a unique selling point.

And the construction period for the project was tight, so that we cannot make a big change on it. So a good strategy was removing the decorations and all the extra vertical lines on the L-shaped corridor, getting rid of the original shape, cleaning the external facade of the original building as much as possible so as to make the building concise and stretching. And then five sets of slides leaning out of the facade can be used to connect the outdoor space of each floor, and children’s activity paths became undulating and has a happy flow.

Our client didn’t have any particular requirement, only hoped to reduce the cost. Under such conditions and circumstances, we still hoped to build a small white world different from the whole community, a clean and real space where children can concentrate on playing and cognition, exploring and thinking, so as to obtain true feelings and happiness.

Q. 설계 과정 중에 가장 중요하게 생각한 것은 무엇인가.
우선, 공동체의 새로운 공간으로서, 공동체에 새로운 활력과 긍정적인 효과를 가져와야 한다고 생각했다. 이 프로젝트가 주변 연계에 영향을 미치고 교육과 아이들과 사회의 관계를 결합할 수 있기를 바랐다. 이러한 마음으로, 새로운 도시 공간이 주변 환경과 관계를 맺어야 한다고 생각했다.

따라서 전체 설계가 논리적으로 됐다. 부지 주변의 크고 작은 여러 구성을 포기하고 공동체에 공공 공간으로 돌려놓았다. 벽을 두껍게 만들어 성장 개발 센터와 외곽 도시 사이의 중간지대를 형성했다. 둥근 담장벽이 제공하는 외부 공간에는 지역에서 휴게 벤치와 운동기구 등을 비치하고 나무를 심을 예정이다. 따라서 사람들은 내부 놀이터에 더 가까이 다가가서 아이들의 활동성에 전파될 수 있다. 그들은 아이들에게 말할 수 있고 아이들의 눈에서 순수함을 느낄 수 있다. 동시에 아이들은 호기심 어린 눈으로 밖에서 노인들이 체스를 두며 기술을 익히는 것을 볼 수 있고, 낯선 사람들과의 일상적인 인사나 교류에 익숙해지고, 밖에 가끔 노점을 차리는 노점상들의 작은 공예품과 영업 관행까지 관찰할 수 있다. 그것은 그 나름의 속성을 가지고 있으며, 동시에 교류에서 도시와 공통점을 가지고 있다. 아이들과 도시와 어른들은 서로에게서 배울 수 있다. 이 양방향 학습이 일방적인 학습보다 더 타당하다고 생각한다. 도시에서는 각각의 사업이 주변 환경을 개선하고 주변 환경에 긍정적인 요소를 가져오는 것이라면 지역사회와 도시가 더 좋아질 것이다.

또 다른 요점은 유사한 재료와 색상을 사용하여 건물과 부지를 통합한다는 것이었다. 채도가 높은 벽은 바깥쪽에서 안쪽으로 융합되어 백색 공간의 입체감각을 지속적으로 정립하는 동시에 기능적 공간의 변혁질서를 안내했다. 순수의 느낌은 우리가 야외 놀이터로 확산시켜 내부 건물과 외부 공간의 경계를 없애려는 의도였는데, 결국 두 부분이 서로 확장되고 통합됐다.

Q. What did you consider the most important thing during designing process in this project?
We first thought that as a new space in the community, it should bring new vitality and positive effects to this community. We hoped that this project could affect the surrounding links, and combine education and the relationship between children and society. With this original intention, we believed that this new urban space should have a relationship with its surroundings.

Thus, the whole design became logical. We gave up many large and small plots around the site and returned it to the community as its public space; and this made the walls thick to form a middle zone between the growth and development center and the outer city. In the spaces outside provided by the roundabout fence walls, the community will furnish with rest seats and sports equipment, and plant trees. Hence people can get closer to the internal playground and be surrounded and infected by the activities of the children. They can talk to the children and feel the purity in the eyes of children. At the same time, children can curiously watching the elderly in the outside playing chess and learn the skills, get used to normal greetings and exchanges with strangers, and even observe the small crafts and business practices of vendors who occasionally set up stalls outside. It has its own attributes, and at the same time has some commonalities with the city in exchanges-children and the cities and adults can learn from each other. I think this two-way learning makes more sense than one-way does. In the city, if each project is to improve the surrounding environment and bring positive factors to the surrounding environment, our community and our city will become better.

Another key point was that, by using similar materials and colors, we integrate the building and the site. Walls with high saturation color were used locally, pitching in from the outside to the inside, which not only leapingly while continuously established the stereoscopic sense of the deep white space, but also guided the transformation order of the functional space. The feeling of purity was intended by us to be spread to the outdoor playground, eliminating the boundary between the internal building and the external space, which two parts ultimately extended and integrated with each other.

Q. 작업하면서 가장 기억에 남는 일이 있다면 듣고 싶다.
어떤 의미에서 공원의 기능과 중요성에 대해 유치원이 받아들이도록 하려고 했다. 그리고 이 목표를 달성하기 위해서는 모든 리듬감 있는 디자인 과정이 한 번에 이루어져야 한다. 굴곡진 담장벽은 내부 활동공간 개발에도 영향을 미쳤다. 이와 같이 외곽도시, 중간지대, 고질적인 경계, 다양한 내부공간, 건물과 운동장 사이의 옥외 플랫폼, 각 야외활동장 앞 홀부터 다양한 실내활동 및 기능공간까지 다차원적 체험이 설정된다. 아이들이 공간을 넘나들 때 인지하고 교류하며 자라게 한다. 이에 상응하여, 이 어린이 성장발달센터는 새로운 형태의 공원과 같은 것이며, 유기적으로 지역사회에 내재되어 있으며, 지역사회에 새로운 활력을 불어넣고 있다.

어린이 성장발달센터는 일반인에게 개방된 뒤 지역민들로부터 점차 ‘벽 없는 낙원’으로 불리고 있다. 마을 주민들은 여기서 놀기 위해 아이들을 데리고 올 매력을 느낀다. 그 부지 남쪽의 미흡한 부분은 우려를 불러일으켰는데, 그것은 의제로 상정되었고 가능한 한 빨리 시정될 예정이다. 그 반대쪽의 사옥은 몇몇 사람들이 그것을 사고 완성하도록 협상을 했다.

마지막으로 중요한 것은 주변 지역들의 주거 주택 가격 또한 불과 몇 달 사이에 10%까지 올랐다는 것이다. 지역사회에 내재된 이 공원은 점차적으로 지역사회 전체에 영향을 미치고 개선되고 있다.

Q. What is the most memorable experience you have had while working on it?
In a sense, we intended to qualify a kindergarten for the function and significance of a park at the same time. And to achieve this goal, the whole rhythmic design process needs to be done at one stretch. The curved fence walls also influenced the developing of the interior activity spaces. In this way, layer by layer, from the outer city, the middle zone, the tortuous boundary, various types of internal venues, the outdoor platforms between the building and the playground, the outer porch, the front hall of each outdoor activity venue to the various indoor activities and functional spaces, a multi-dimensional experience is set for the children to perceive when crossing through the spaces and grow up in exchanges. Correspondingly, this child growth and development center is like a new form of park, organically embedded into the community, injecting new vitality into the community.

After opening to the public, the child growth and development center has been gradually referred to as “paradise without walls” by local people. Residents of the community are attracted to bring their children to play here; the rudimentary municipal road on the south side of the site raised concern, which has been put on the agenda and will be repaired as soon as possible; the office building opposite has been negotiated by some people to buy and complete its construction;

last but not the least, residential housing prices in surrounding communities have also increased by 10% in just a few months. This park embedded in the community is gradually affecting and improving the whole community.

Q. 언아키텍트의 건축 철학은 무엇인가. 이 프로젝트에 그 철학을 어떻게 적용했는지 궁금하다.
건축가가 아닌 사람들에게 우리가 기대하는 것은 혁신적인 연구와 현실적이고 흠잡을 데 없는 건축이고, 우리가 반대하는 것은 어떤 형태로든 저속한 표절과 모방이다. 최근이든 고대이든 우리가 직면한 모든 것을 개방적이고 존중하는 마음으로 대한다. 도시 변화, 조경 결과, 공간적 느낌에 주목하면서, 동시에 독창적이고 정밀하며 가식적이지 않은 디자인에 초점을 맞춘다. 우리는 모든 항목 또는 환경의 필수적이고 중요한 요소를 연구하여 다양한 각도에서 고려사항과 탐색의 균형을 통합적으로 조정하여 새로운 재료, 새로운 기능, 새로운 방식, 새로운 형태 및 새로운 경험을 향한 경로를 공개한다. 우리는 디자인의 경계를 넓히기 위해 노력을 아끼지 않는다.

이 프로젝트는 설계와 시공이 통합된 첫 번째 프로젝트였다. 비용이 거의 제한되지 않는다는 전제 하에 유치원과 도시의 관계를 연구하고, 건물과 부지를 통합해 교실 밖 아이들의 실내 활동 욕구를 충족시켰다. 그리고 경제적이고 환경 친화적인 재료 선정을 통해, 이 프로젝트는 공동체를 개선하는 추가적인 역할을 달성했다.

Q. What is an architectural philosophy of unarchitecte? And how did you apply the philosophy to this project?
For unarchitecte, what we admire is innovative research and real, impeccable construction, what we oppose is vulgar plagiarism and imitation in any form. Whatever we are facing, latest or ancient, we treat it all with openness and respect. Paying attention to urban changes, landscape consequences and spatial feeling, we, at the same time, focus on original, precise and unpretentious design. We study the essential and significant elements of any item or environment, integrally balancing considerations and explorations from all angles, so as to unveil the path towards new material, new function, new way, new form and new experience. We spare no effort to broaden the boundaries of design.

This project was our first integration project of design and construction. Under the premise that the cost was rarely limited, we did research on the relationship between kindergarten and the city, integrated the building and the site, which fulfilled children’s indoor activities needs outside the classroom. And with an economic and environmentally-friendly selection of materials, the project has achieved the additional role of improving the community.
