이번 프로젝트는 과밀한 주거 단지의 부족한 여유 공간과 커뮤니티 생성의 가능성을 위해 TM스튜디오가 계획했다. 그들이 제안한 계획안은 기존 불법 상업시설들이 철거된 보행로 위에 담벼락을 해체하고 사람들이 모이는 장소를 기획하는 방법이었다. 350m에 달하는 도심 속 선형 녹지공간을 창출한 그들의 계획은 짐짓 도시 재생의 방법으로 보이기도 한다. 존재해왔던 공간의 재구성을 통해 주변의 환경요소들과 사람들의 커뮤니티가 이어지는 ‘결절점’으로 재탄생하는 과정을 보다 면밀히 알아보기 위해 TM스튜디오와 인터뷰를 진행했다. 그들의 건축과 철학이 지역사회에 어떤 방법으로 기여하고 있는지 알아보자.

This project was planned by TM Studio for the possibility of creating a community and free space that the densely-populated residential complex was lacking. The plan they proposed was to break down the walls on the pedestrian path, on which existing illegal commercial facilities were demolished, and to design a place for people to gather. Their plan, which created a 350m-long linear green space in the urban center, also seems to be a method of urban regeneration. We conducted an interview with TM Studio in order to discover in more detail the process of rebirth as a ‘nodule point’ that connects the surrounding environmental elements with the community of people through the reconstruction of the space that has existed. Let’s take a look at how their architecture and philosophy are contributing to the community.

Q. 이번 달의 주제는 “도시를 연결하는 결절점”이다. 건축가의 관점에서 도시와 건물(또는 사람)을 연결하는 조경에 대해 어떻게 생각하는가?
도시의 특색 있는 조경 건축은 누구에게나 평등한 접근성을 가지면서 도시 생활의 큰 부분을 담당하며, 사람들의 일상 생활에 활력을 불어넣는다. 이번 프로젝트가 속한 대지는 자연과 가까워지고 다른 사람들의 삶을 관찰하는 장소다. 사람들은 가끔 지나가고 이끌리고 마침내 돌아오고, 다른 사람들을 만나고 관계를 맺는다. 이러한 행위들을 통해 도시 생활이 시작되는 것이다.

Q. This month’s issue is “A nodule point that connects the city”. From an architect’s point of view, what do you think about landscape architecture that connects urban and building (or people)?
Characteristic landscape architecture in the city plays as the generator of urban life, increasing vitality to people’s life routine. It offers equal access to anyone. It is a place to get close to nature and to observe other people’s lives. People pass by occasionally, attracted and finally return, meet others and make connections. And this is when city life begins.

Q. 오래된 보행로에서 이번 프로젝트를 계획하는 과정에서 가장 중요하게 생각한 요소는 무엇이었나? 도시와 건축(또는 오래된 것과 새로운 것) 사이에 어떤 관계가 형성되어야 한다고 생각하는가?
소주(Suzhou) 정원을 건설했던 경험이 프로젝트의 핵심 참고 자료가 되었다. 식생, 커뮤니티 시설, 주택 그리고 주민들이 대상지에서 상호 작용하는 방식을 포함하는 환경적인 요소들과 새로 계획될 공간 사이의 유기적인 연결을 설정하는 것이 오롯이 서 있는 건축물 자체에 완전한 노력을 기울이는 것보다 중요하다.

Q. What do you think is the most important element when you were redesigning from old walkway to this project? How the relationship should be formed between urban and architecture(or old and new)?
The construction wisdom of Suzhou gardens acted as a key reference for this project. Rather than the integral expression of an isolated architecture itself, it is more important to establish an organic connection between the new-built part with the environmental elements, which includes plants, community facility houses, as well as the way how residents interacting this site.

Q. 이번 프로젝트를 준비하면서 특히 어떤 부분에 집중했는가?
기존 환경 요소의 배열 및 재생성은 디자인 중에 가장 중점을 두는 부분이다. 현장에는 나무의 위치, 펌프장, 경비실, 버스 정류장, 길가의 자전거 수리점, 길 건너 초등학교 앞의 횡단보도 위치 및 카드 놀이 장소로 가장 인기 있는 장소 등이 있었다. 이러한 모든 요소들이 최종적으로 건설된 프로젝트의 강조된 부분으로 바뀌는데, 이것은 프로젝트에서 배경 역할을 하면서 자연과 활기찬 도시 생활을 보여준다.

Q. What part did you especially focus on while preparing for this project?
The arrangement and re-creation of existing environmental elements are the most focused part of the process. Accurate records of the site elements include the position of the trees, the pump houses, the guardrooms, the bus stop, the bicycle repair point by the street, the position of the zebra crossing in front of the elementary school across the street, and the most popular place for card playing, etc. Almost all these elements finally turn into the highlighted part of the new built linear garden, which serves as a background stage and presents the nature and the vibrant city lives.

Q. 작업하면서 가장 기억에 남는 경험에 대해 듣고 싶다. 그리고 프로젝트가 지어지고 난 후, 개선하고 싶은 점이 있다면 무엇인가?
가장 기억에 남는 경험은 지역 주민들과 나눴던 교류다. 고밀도 지역의 커뮤니티 리노베이션 프로젝트로 인해, 이 대지는 11개 주거용 건물의 측벽을 따라 밀접하게 퍼져 있다. 시공 과정에서 주민들의 피드백을 바탕으로 디자인 조정이 마지막 순간까지 계속되었다. 또한, 모든 협상 프로세스 덕분에 이 프로젝트는 여러 요구 사항을 수용하고 개인적 이익과 공공 가치의 균형을 이룰 수 있었다. 추가적으로, 이 프로젝트에서 영감을 받은 도시 생활의 다양성은 우리의 상상을 초월했다. 선형 정원의 대부분은 구불구불한 복도로 설계됐으며 경로를 따라 머무를 수 있는 더 많은 공간을 고려해야 했다.

Q. What is the most memorable experience you have had while working on it? After it was realized, do you have anything you would like to improve?
The most memorable experience is interactions with local residents. As a community renovation project in a high-density area, the site spreads closely along the sidewalls of 11 residential buildings. During the construction process, adjustments of design based on residents’ feedback kept going until the last moment. And it is also because of all the negotiation process, the project achieves a tolerance of multiple demands and a balance of private interest and public value. The diversity of city life inspired by this project is beyond our imagination. A majority part of the linear garden is designed as wandering corridor, more space for staying needs to be considered along the path.

Q. TM스튜디오의 건축 철학은 무엇인가? 그리고 이번 프로젝트에 어떻게 그 철학이 반영되었는가?
건축은 실제 삶에 대한 예술이며, 맥락 없이 존재할 수 없고 삶에 대한 우리의 상상력을 구체화시킨 결과다. 그러나 건축은 물질주의 세계의 한계에만 머물러서는 안 되고, 기존의 한계를 넘어서야 한다. 건축가는 이 두 가지를 연결시킬 방법을 찾을 수 있는 사람이다. TM스튜디오의 목적은 개인의 지적 탐구를 인간 사회 및 건축적 환경과 연결하는 것이다. 우리는 사회 속 자연환경에 신경을 쓰는데, 이를 통제하거나 변화시키려는 의도가 아니라 환경을 이해하고 함께 공존할 수 있는 방법을 알기 위해 노력한다. TM스튜디오는 항상 광범위한 학습과 연구뿐만 아니라 지식과 아이디어를 디자인에 활용하는 것에 관심이 있다.

Q. What is an architectural philosophy of TM Studio (or you)? And how did you apply the philosophy to this project?
Architecture is art about real life, it could not exist without context, and must be a result of making our imagination about life concrete. Yet architecture could not be satisfied with only staying on the limits of the materialistic world, and it has to go beyond the existing condition. So, the architect is the one who can find a way to get these two connected. The aim of TM Studio is to bridge personal and intellectual exploration with human society and built environment. TM Studio cares about social and natural environment, it doesn’t intend to control or change them, but try to understand them and know how to work with them. TM Studio is always interested in extensive learning and studying as well as using knowledge and thinking to generate work.

Q. 마지막으로 건축가로서 당신의 포부에 대해 알려 달라. TM스튜디오의 다음 목표는 무엇인가?
사회문제에 관심을 가진 한 명의 건축가로서, TM스튜디오는 평범한 환경에서 일상생활의 새로운 패턴을 발견하고 추출하며 디자인에 품격과 우아함을 부여하는 질서 체계를 확립하는 것에 항상 관심을 두고 있다. 21세기의 끊임없이 변화하는 세계 속에서 중국은 급격한 발전과 산업화를 이뤘다. 이는 오로지 형태에 대한 집착에 이끌려 맥락 없는 무질서한 이미지의 홍수라는 결과를 초래했다. 따라서 전체를 구성하는 서로 다른 부분 간의 연결이 필수적이다.

TM스튜디오는 현재와 과거, 상상과 현실, 사건, 환경 등 변화하는 세계에서 단절된 측면을 어떻게 통합할 것인가에 대해 지속적으로 초점을 맞출 예정이다. 이미 존재하는 것에 관여하고, 존재하는 것을 출발점으로 사용하고, 분석을 통해 이상을 가져오고, 현실의 잠재력을 드러내고, 변화와 통합을 새로운 통찰력과 표현으로 이끄는 경로로 적용하는 것이 우리의 의무라고 생각한다.

Q. In conclusion, could you tell us about aspirations as an architect? What is TM Studio‘s next step?
As an architect who cares about social issues, TM Studio is always interested in discovering and extracting new patterns of daily life from a familiar environment, and establishing orders to give dignity and elegance to our design objects. The drastic development and industrialization of China resulted in a continually changing world in the 21st century. There comes a flood of image as the consequence of chaotic expression with no sense of context, driven solely by obsession with forms. Therefore, the linkage between the different parts that constitute a whole is essential.

TM studio will continue to focus on how to integrate the disconnected aspects in this changing world, such as present and past, imagination and reality, events and environment. It is our duty to engage with what is already there, to use what exists as a starting point, to bring ideals through analysis and to reveal the potential of the reality, to apply transformation and integration as a path that lead to new insight and expressions.
