건축가의 시선으로, 미래의 삶을 상상하는 시간
2025년 4월, 일본 오사카 유메시마 섬에서 ‘2025 오사카·간사이 엑스포(이하 2025 오사카 엑스포)’가 개막했다. ‘미래 사회를 향한 디자인(Designing Future Society for Our Lives)’이라는 주제 아래, 150개국 이상이 참가하며 각국의 비전과 가치를 담은 파빌리온들이 세계인의 이목을 끌고 있다. 개막 이후 현장을 찾은 관람객들은 파빌리온을 통해 하나의 건축적 메시지를 경험하고 있다. 우리는 기후 위기, 고령화, 기술 혁신, 팬데믹같은 범지구적 이슈 앞에서, 과거와는 다른 삶의 방식과 공간 구조가 필요한 시점이다. 2025 오사카 엑스포에서 전시되는 파빌리온은 이러한 시대적 질문에 대한 국가적 차원의 응답이자, 건축가 개인의 해석과 상상력이 더해진 결과물이다. 그들은 각각의 공간을 통해 ‘어떤 미래를, 어떻게 살아갈 것인가’에 대한 건축적 해답을 내놓았다. 이번 비욘드 아키에서는 2025 오사카 엑스포에 참여한 세계 각국의 파빌리온 중 4개의 프로젝트를 선정하여, 설계를 담당한 건축가들의 인터뷰를 담았다. 공간을 통한 메시지, 재료와 기술의 실험 그리고 관람하는 사람들이 경험까지. 이것은 단순히 건축을 전시하는 것이 아니라, 미래의 삶을 상상하게 하는 일종의 선언이자 제언이다.

이탈리아관 (The Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka)

마리오 쿠치넬라 아키텍츠가 설계한 이탈리아관은 ‘생명을 구하는 기술’을 주제로, 인간·자연·기술의 새로운 균형을 제안하는 순환형 건축이다. 모듈형 목구조와 반투명 외피를 통해 지속 가능한 시스템을 구현하며, 전통과 혁신, 예술과 과학이 어우러진 몰입형 공간을 구성한다. 전시는 장인 정신, 디지털 무대, 이상 도시, 지역 문화로 이어지며, 카라바조의 <예수의 매장> 전시로 정점을 이룬다. 해체와 재사용이 가능한 구조로 엑스포 이후에도 지속 가능한 가치를 이어가는 플랫폼이다.
Designed by Mario Cucinella Architects, the Italian Pavilion explores the theme “Saving Lives” through a circular architectural system that reimagines the balance between humanity, nature, and technology. Built with modular timber and a translucent envelope, the pavilion merges tradition and innovation, science and art within an immersive, sustainable space. The exhibition unfolds across themes including craftsmanship, digital performance, utopian cities, and regional diversity, culminating in a display of The Entombment of Christ by Caravaggio. With its dismantlable and reusable structure, the pavilion serves as a long-lasting platform for sustainable value beyond the Expo.
영국관 (The UK Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka)

‘미래를 함께 짓다(Come Build the Future)’라는 슬로건 아래, 우 아키텍츠가 설계한 영국관은 산업혁명부터 미래 기술까지, 영국의 혁신을 공간적으로 풀어낸다. *직물 공장의 펀치카드를 모티프로 한 픽셀화된 파사드는 낮과 밤에 따라 다르게 반응하며, 기술과 디자인의 유산을 시각화한다. 모듈형 구조로 지어진 이 건축물은 전시 종료 후 재사용을 염두에 두고 설계되었다. 루프탑의 조니워커 바, 클래식한 티룸, 외교 공간까지, 공간 곳곳에 영국의 창의성과 환대 문화가 녹아 있다. 건축과 전시, 풍경이 하나로 이어지는 이곳에서 영국이 제안하는 미래의 단면을 만나볼 수 있다.

Designed by WOO Architects under the theme “Come Build the Future,” the UK Pavilion explores Britain’s legacy of innovation from the Industrial Revolution to future technologies through spatial storytelling. Inspired by textile punch cards, the pixelated aluminum facade shifts with light by day and transforms into a dynamic Union Jack animation by night. This modular structure was designed with reuse in mind after the exhibition ends. The exhibition journey highlights the UK’s creativity and technical ingenuity, while the rooftop “Johnnie Walker Bar” and classic British tea room reflect the nation’s spirit of hospitality. Blending architecture, landscape, and experience, the UK Pavilion offers a layered narrative of innovation, identity, and openness inviting visitors to imagine and build the future together.
일본관 (The Japan Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka)

2025 오사카·간사이 엑스포의 일본 정부관은 ‘생명과 생명 사이에’를 주제로, 생명의 순환과 지속 가능성을 건축적으로 구현한 공간이다. CLT(직교 집성판)를 반복적으로 배치해 원형의 건축 구조를 만들고, 빛과 바람이 통하는 틈을 통해 자연과 연결된 감각을 유도한다. 전시는 입체적인 동선과 더불어, 음식물 쓰레기를 에너지로 전환하는 바이오가스 설비, 장애인과 비장애인이 함께 이동할 수 있는 회랑 등 생태적·사회적 순환의 가치를 담고 있다. 해체와 재조립을 전제로 한 구조, 최소 가공의 목재 사용, 그리고 단순하고 자연적인 재료 구성은 순환 경제의 정신을 드러낸다. 전시와 건축이 일체화된 이 파빌리온은, 오감을 통해 생명의 연결성을 체험하도록 이끄는 공간이다.
The Japan Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai embodies the theme “Between Lives,” proposing a spatial interpretation of life’s circulation and sustainability. Using cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels arranged in a circular formation, the structure creates a sense of rhythm and openness, allowing light and air to pass through gaps that connect the architecture to nature. The pavilion’s layered pathways guide visitors through immersive exhibits, including a bio-gas plant that converts food waste into energy, and a universal circulation route designed for both disabled and non-disabled visitors. With a structure designed for full disassembly and reuse, the use of minimally processed timber and simple, natural materials reinforces the principles of a circular economy. By unifying architecture and exhibition, the Japan Pavilion offers a multi-sensory experience that invites visitors to reflect on the interconnectedness of all life.
